Seven islets, but most of the heritage lies below the surface

The Medes form a small archipelago off l’Estartit on the Costa Brava. Catalonia’s natural-park services emphasise the richness of the marine environment: well-lit rocky communities, shade-adapted communities, Posidonia oceanica meadows, coralligenous habitats and underwater cavities. The dramatic landscape is therefore not limited to the rocks emerging from the sea. Much of the system is underwater.

The partial nature reserve has such ecological value that extraction of resources is prohibited. That changes the logic of a visit: fish are not resources to be taken but parts of a living system to observe. Observation tourism becomes directly dependent on conservation of the very features that attract visitors.

Posidonia oceanica is a flowering plant, not an alga

Posidonia is a marine flowering plant endemic to the Mediterranean. Catalan authorities describe its meadow habitat as a community-interest habitat and state that the bed west of Meda Gran and Meda Petita is among the best preserved on the Catalan coast. Many animals find food and shelter among its leaves.

That changes how a green underwater plain should be read. A seagrass meadow is not an empty backdrop to cross on the way to “real fish”. It is itself habitat. Leaves and rhizomes contribute to the physical structure and biological functioning of the seabed.

Why anchoring can conflict with seagrass protection

The park explains that anchoring was prohibited in protected seagrass areas and ecological mooring buoys were installed. The reason is mechanical: an anchor and chain can tear plants or plough the seabed. A boat that appears motionless at the surface may therefore create an invisible impact below.

Responsible mooring is a useful example of environmental design. Management does not simply ban all use; it changes infrastructure so that the desired function, holding a boat in place, can be separated from the unwanted effect of dragging gear across habitat.

Snorkeling and diving: shared habitats, different constraints

Snorkeling remains mostly at the surface, while scuba allows deeper access. The park regulates underwater activities and works with authorised operators. For a surface swimmer, the mistake would be to assume that no scuba tank means no impact. Fins can strike the bottom, a swimmer can stand on rock or move too close to organisms.

A robust practice is to stay horizontal, anticipate shallow water and avoid any support on the bottom. Observation then becomes consistent with its purpose: see without changing.

What a camera can show about biodiversity

An action camera is good at recording schools of fish, light changes and rocky topography. It is less reliable for exact identification when an animal is distant, moving quickly or distorted by refraction. The short-version description names dentex, sea bream, sargo and grouper. Those labels are useful as the creator’s observations, but precise identification should remain proportional to image quality.

Refraction also explains why underwater distance and size feel unusual. Light changes direction as it passes between water, mask air and the observer’s eye. Objects may appear closer than they are. This is not a camera defect; it is part of underwater perception itself.

A reserve as a laboratory for tourism that depends on restraint

The Medes illustrate a classic tension. Ecological richness attracts visitors, yet visitor pressure can threaten that richness if unmanaged. Extraction rules, mooring systems and activity controls are designed to keep the feedback loop within acceptable limits.

For a Delta-Sierra dossier, that is more instructive than a destination recommendation. The experience exists because ecological capital has been protected. Future snorkeling quality therefore depends on habitat conservation, managed use and individual behaviour.

Protected does not mean untouched

The same difference in timescale explains why rules can look stricter than the impact of one person. Management is designed around the sum of repeated actions, not only the footprint of an isolated swimmer.

When uses are managed consistently for years, scientific monitoring can better separate long-term environmental trends from daily variability. That timescale is usually invisible to a visitor who experiences only a few hours. Management operates across seasons, populations, habitats and cumulative pressures. This dossier connects the two scales so that the state of a reserve is not judged from one snorkeling session.
