The Larzac Canalettes: how water sculpts a plateau that appears dry
The Larzac often looks like a dry plateau. That is precisely why its karst hydrology is so important: much of the water does not remain on the surface but infiltrates the limestone. The Grands Causses Regional Natural Park describes the Causse between roughly 600 and 1,100 metres elevation, with dry grassland, dolines and ruin-like rock formations.
The Canalettes make dissolution visible at walking scale. Fissures, narrow corridors, arches, rock shelters and irregular blocks reflect the progressive widening of fractures by water, combined with weathering and freeze-thaw. The Park’s Canoles route specifically highlights this diversity, including passages scarcely wider than a backpack.
Below the plateau, however, water can move in significant quantities. The Durzon spring is a karst resurgence whose recharge basin is given at around 100 square kilometres by the Park. This relationship between an apparently stream-poor plateau and large underground water stores is a central key to the landscape: the visible surface is only the upper boundary of a much larger hydrological system.
The Larzac is also a pastoral landscape. Lavognes, tracks, woodland and dry grasslands show how people adapted to thin soils and scarce surface water.
