It now reports more than 3,000 individuals, including young born at the Reserve. That distinction matters: this is a rewilding and ecological-replacement project, not a resurrection of the extinct Rodrigues tortoises.
Grande Caverne adds a completely different dimension. South-west Rodrigues contains a limestone landscape of caves and dolines; the Reserve identifies nine caves and has equipped Grande Caverne with raised walkways and low-impact lighting for visitors. This approach is ecological replacement within a rewilding project.
