Three-dimensional animations made of tens of thousands of points of light, created with artificial intelligence and accompanied by the site’s original soundtrack. Each monument is rebuilt from its known dimensions, then lit like a film set.
A recent browser and a good connection are recommended: the animation plays full screen, with or without music. Press Escape or the “Back” button to return to this page.
The Saga of Humanity — Rome: the Colosseum
New
The Colosseum as it stands today, with its collapsed southern side, rebuilt in three dimensions from its known dimensions — 188 × 156 m, 80 arches per level, 48.5 m high — and lit by the setting sun. The camera arrives from afar, circles the monument, then travels along the façade.
About 150,000 points of light

3D model built by code with documented proportions (the-colosseum.net; Platner & Ashby, 1929). The height of each storey is estimated.
How these animations are made
Architecture and machines: three-dimensional models built by code, with the proportions of the real monuments.
Characters: computer-generated images turned into relief with a depth map (in the next chapters).
Light: shadows and lighting are computed once, then rendered in real time by the graphics card.
Music: the site’s original soundtrack.
Further chapters are in preparation: Greece, the Middle Ages, the space age, Mars…
